General Questions

1. How do I place an order?

You can contact us via our website, email, or social media to discuss your project. Once we finalize the details, we’ll provide an estimate and instructions for shipping your materials.

2. Do you require a deposit?

Yes, we require a deposit of half of the quoted estimate at the beginning of the job. The remaining balance is due upon completion before shipping.

3. Do you accept local drop-offs and pickups?

Yes! If you’re local, we can arrange a drop-off and pickup time. Please contact us in advance to schedule.

Custom Memory Quilts

4. What types of fabric can be used for memory quilts?

We can use a variety of fabrics, including cotton, flannel, denim, dress shirts, T-shirts, baby clothes, and more. If you’re unsure whether your fabric is suitable, just ask!

5. How many clothing items do I need for a quilt?

The number of items depends on the quilt size and fabric type. A throw-size quilt (50”x60”) typically requires 10-15 adult shirts or a mix of smaller pieces.

6. Can I choose the design and colors?

Yes! We will work with you to create a quilt that reflects your vision. If you have specific preferences, let us know. Otherwise, we can recommend patterns and color schemes.

7. How long does it take to make a memory quilt?

Turnaround times vary based on demand and complexity. For quilts made from scratch, our turnaround time is approximately six months. If you have an earlier deadline, we will do our best to accommodate your request—please contact us to discuss availability.

8. When should I place my order for a Christmas quilt?

We generally stop taking Christmas quilt orders in August to ensure enough time for completion and delivery. If you need a quilt for the holidays, we recommend placing your order as early as possible.

9. How many T-shirts or sweatshirts do I need for a quilt?

For a throw-size (50"x60") T-shirt quilt, you’ll need approximately 15-20 adult T-shirts. If you’re using sweatshirts, you may need fewer, as they take up more space. If you’re interested in a different size, we can help determine how many shirts you’ll need.

Long-Arm Quilting Services

10. What types of long-arm quilting do you offer?

We provide edge-to-edge quilting and custom quilting. Edge-to-edge quilting is a continuous design across the quilt, while custom quilting features more detailed, unique patterns.

11. How much does long-arm quilting cost?

  • Edge-to-edge quilting: Starting at $0.03 per square inch

  • Custom quilting: Pricing is determined by design complexity.

12. What batting do you offer?

We carry cotton, wool, and a poly/cotton blend. You may also provide your own batting if preferred.

13. Can you provide backing fabric?

Yes! We offer quilt backing fabric for an additional cost. If you provide your own, it must be at least six inches larger than the quilt top on all four sides.

14. Do you offer binding services?

Yes, we offer machine binding for an additional fee. If you prefer to bind your quilt yourself, we also offer trimming services to square it up before returning it to you.

15. How long does long-arm quilting take?

  • Edge-to-edge quilting: Turnaround time is approximately six weeks.

  • Custom quilting: Turnaround time depends on the complexity and density of the design.

Signature Quilts

16. How does a signature quilt work?

Guests at your event write messages on fabric squares, which we later assemble into a quilt. These quilts are popular for weddings, baby showers, retirements, and reunions.

17. How much do signature quilts cost?

Pricing is determined by quantity and size of squares. Contact us to discuss your needs!

18. Do I need to provide my own fabric squares for a signature quilt?

We can provide your cut squares, or you can supply them to reduce shipping costs between us. If you’re providing your own, we recommend using a charm pack (pre-cut 5.5-inch squares). Charm packs come in a variety of colors and patterns, making them a great option for signature quilts.

For the best results, we suggest choosing a fabric that isn't too busy, so the messages remain clearly visible and readable once written and sewn into the quilt.

19. Is there anything guests should keep in mind when signing the fabric squares?

Yes! If using our prepared squares, remind your guests to leave at least a half-inch of space on all four sides of the square when writing their message. This ensures that their words won’t be lost in the seams when the quilt is assembled.

Memory Teddy Bears & Stuffed Animals

20. What kind of clothing can be used for a Memory Teddy Bear?

We can use baby clothes, flannel shirts, uniforms, T-shirts, or other sentimental fabrics.

21. How much do Memory Teddy Bears cost?

Memory Teddy Bears are $80 each, with customization options available.

22. Can I request embroidery on my teddy bear?

Yes! We offer custom embroidery (names, dates, or special messages) for an additional fee.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Quilt Care Guide – Keeping Your Quilts Beautiful for Years

At Stitches N Ditches, every quilt is crafted with love and care, and we want to help you keep it that way. Follow these tips to ensure your quilt remains beautiful and lasts for generations.

Washing Your Quilt

  • First Wash: When washing your quilt for the first time, use cold water, gentle cycle, and at least 10 color catchers.

  • What is a Color Catcher? A color catcher is a disposable sheet that absorbs dye released during washing, preventing colors from bleeding onto other fabrics. You can find color catchers in the laundry aisle of most grocery stores, big-box retailers, or online.

  • Mild Detergent: Use a mild, dye-free detergent. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.

  • Avoid Overloading: Wash your quilt alone to prevent damage from other items.

  • Rinse Thoroughly: Ensure all detergent is rinsed out to avoid residue buildup.

Drying Your Quilt

  • Air Dry When Possible: Lay flat on a clean surface or line dry in the shade. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading.

  • Tumble Dry on Low: If using a dryer, use a low heat setting and remove when slightly damp to air dry completely.

  • Fluff Regularly: Gently shake and fluff your quilt while drying to prevent wrinkles and uneven drying.

Storing Your Quilt

  • Avoid Plastic Bags: Store quilts in a cotton bag, pillowcase, or acid-free box to allow airflow.

  • Cool, Dry Place: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, humidity, or extreme temperatures.

  • Refold Regularly: Refold your quilt every few months to prevent permanent creases or wear along the folds.

Repairing Small Damage

  • Loose Threads or Seams: Gently hand-stitch any loose threads back into place with a matching thread color.

  • Small Tears or Holes: Apply a fabric patch or contact me for repair services to ensure the integrity of your quilt.
